Google's AI Mode can now book a hotel room without the guest ever reaching the hotel's website. It started in the US, in English, with ten large chains and online travel agencies, and Google hands every question after payment to the hotel or the booking platform.

That last part is the one hotels should plan for. An AI can complete the booking. It cannot tell a guest whether the garage fits a van, whether breakfast starts early on Sundays, or whether the room can take a cot. Those questions arrive at the property, and they arrive by message.

What Google actually launched

On 27 August 2026, Google announced travel booking in AI Mode. The hotel flow works in one conversation. A traveller describes the trip and what matters to them, gets a visual shortlist with photos, rates and reviews, and picks a hotel. They then choose a booking partner and continue on Google, where they select a room type, read the cancellation policy and pay with Google Pay.

The limits are specific:

  • Where: rolling out in the US, in English, over the weeks after the announcement.
  • Not in Europe: the announcement says the new features are not available in EEA countries and territories.
  • Who can be booked: Booking.com, Choice Hotels International, Expedia, Hilton, Hotels.com, IHG Hotels & Resorts, Marriott International, Priceline, Trip.com and Wyndham Hotels & Resorts.
  • After the booking: Google says the hotel or booking platform "will act as the merchant of record and handle any customer service."

Google does not take over the stay. It takes over the moment of choice and the payment, then steps back.

Independent hotels are not on the list

The launch partners are five hotel groups and five online travel agencies. The announcement describes no programme, feed or sign-up for independent properties to take part directly.

In practice, an independent hotel will most often appear in AI Mode through one of the agency partners. That means the booking, the payment and the commission run through the agency, even though the guest never saw the agency's site. We have written about why online travel agencies are winning trips that AI plans, and how direct bookings win some back. AI Mode makes that argument concrete.

It also changes what "being found" means. The shortlist AI Mode shows is built from what Google can read about each property: rates, reviews, amenities and policies. A hotel whose facts are incomplete or inconsistent is easy to leave out. The machine-readable hotel covers how to structure that information so an AI can use it.

The booking ends at Google. The questions do not.

When a guest books through AI Mode, the confirmation comes from the partner. The questions about the actual stay go to the property: early check-in, parking, the pet policy, a late arrival, a birthday in the room. Google's own wording puts customer service with the hotel or the platform. In our experience, questions about the building itself end up with the hotel either way, whichever company took the payment.

Those questions arrive on the channels guests already use. Across the 190+ properties that run guest messaging on vGuest, 97% of guest conversations happen on WhatsApp. A guest who booked in a conversation with an AI expects the next conversation to be just as quick.

Some of those next messages will not be typed by the guest at all. The same trend that put booking inside AI Mode is putting the guest's own AI in touch with the hotel before the guest is: precise, several questions in one message, and expecting a precise answer. [Answering an AI agent](/blog/answering-an-ai-agent-what-your-messaging-must-handle) sets out what a hotel's messaging has to handle when that happens.

What an independent hotel can do now

Nothing here requires joining AI Mode. It prepares the hotel for guests who booked through it, and for the assistants reading it.

1. Make the facts machine-readable and consistent. Policies, parking, pets, check-in times and accessibility should say the same thing on the website, the Google Business Profile and every channel listing. Conflicting answers are the easiest way to drop out of an AI shortlist. 2. Answer messages accurately, at any hour. The guest who booked at 11pm through an assistant will ask their first question at 11:05pm. The answer should come from the hotel's own information, and anything the hotel has not written down should go to a person rather than be guessed. 3. Keep a direct channel worth using. Once a guest is talking to the property on WhatsApp, the next stay can be booked there, without the agency in the middle.

What we do not know yet

  • How independents get in. Google has not published a way for independent hotels to take part directly. It may come later, or it may stay with the partners.
  • How the shortlist is ranked. The announcement does not say how AI Mode chooses and orders hotels, or how much reviews, price and data quality each count.
  • When it reaches other markets. Hotel booking started in the US in English. There is no date for other countries, and the EEA is excluded for now.
  • What happens to commissions. If most independent bookings in AI Mode run through agency partners, the cost of those bookings will look like agency cost, not direct.

We will update this post when Google publishes more.

What to do first

Send your own hotel the ten questions guests ask most, on the channel they use, from a phone, after 10pm. Check whether each answer is correct, consistent with your website, and fast. That is the experience a guest who booked in AI Mode will have next, and it is entirely in the hotel's control.

Common questions

Can guests book a hotel inside Google AI Mode?

Yes, in the US. Google announced on 27 August 2026 that hotel booking in AI Mode had started rolling out in English in the US. A guest describes the trip, picks a hotel from the options shown, chooses a booking partner, reviews the room and cancellation policy, and pays with Google Pay without leaving Search.

Is AI Mode hotel booking available in Europe?

Not yet. Google's announcement says the new travel features are not available in EEA countries and territories, and hotel booking started in the US in English. Hotels in Europe cannot be booked this way today, although their US guests may already plan trips with AI Mode.

Which hotels can be booked through AI Mode?

Google named ten launch partners: Booking.com, Choice Hotels International, Expedia, Hilton, Hotels.com, IHG Hotels & Resorts, Marriott International, Priceline, Trip.com and Wyndham Hotels & Resorts. The announcement does not describe a way for independent hotels to take part directly. An independent property is most likely to appear through an online travel agency partner.

Who handles customer service for a booking made in AI Mode?

The hotel or the booking platform, not Google. Google says the partner acts as merchant of record and handles customer service. Guests still contact the property itself about the stay, such as parking, arrival times and requests, so the hotel's own messaging has to answer accurately.
